The early paintings of the collection are headed by the striking portrait of an Umbrian lady [number given by Dr. Lionello Venturi to Perugino in a convincing analysis, in which the close likeness to the female heads in the Virgin Between S. [ohn and S. Francis in the National Gallery, and The Coronation of the Perugia Pinacoteca, is stressed. This charming and delicate head retains a Gothic feeling expressed in the formal simplicity of the model ing, and seems almost to' belong to the last period of an age long passed by the early maturity of Raphael, Perugino's great pupil, the emotionalism of whose flowing forms already denotes the full tide of the Renaissance.
