Synopsis

The life and work of Cicero, told with clarity and arc, to illuminate his era and influence.

This comprehensive biography presents Marcus Tullius Cicero as a whole person—husband, lawyer, statesman, and writer—set against the vibrant world of late Republic Rome. It follows his rise, political battles, and lasting impact while explaining the Roman background that makes his story meaningful to readers today.

The book aims to balance his political activities with his achievements as an orator, philosopher, and letter writer. It draws on Cicero’s own writings and on the broader tradition of Roman and Greek thought to show how rhetoric, philosophy, and public life intertwined in his world. The discussion also places Cicero within the currents of his time, from his youth in Arpinum to his death in the upheavals that followed Caesar’s fall.

• Charts Cicero’s life from boyhood to consulship, exile, and late career, framing his personal and public journeys
• Explains how Roman politics, law, and oratory shaped his choices and debates
• Shows how his writings—speeches, essays, and letters—mirror his character and times
• Gives context from other ancient sources to illuminate his influence and legacy

Ideal for readers of classical history, Roman politics, and the study of rhetoric.
