Excerpt from A Treatise on the Method of Least Squares, or the Application of the Theory of Probabilities in the Combination of Observations
As the Method of Least Squares is applicable in almost all the physical sciences where numerical results are to be de duced from observations, and is here treated from fundae mental and general principles, it is thought that this separate publication of the Appendix will supply the want that has for a long time been felt of a suitable text-book on this sub jcet for the use of students of practical science generally, and more especially of classes in our scientific schools.
