Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church: With an Introduction on the Study of Ecclesiastical History
The Introduction to this volume consists of three Lectures delivered in the spring of 1857, when I entered upon my duties as Professor of Ecclesiastical History. They are reprinted, partly for the sake of presenting them in a more correct form than that in which they first appeared, p'artly for the sake of exhibiting the general plan under which will be comprised any special Lectures like those which form the bulk of the present volume.

It discusses the relationship between Civil and Ecclesiastical History, noting points of divergence between them. They contend that the Church's history is inseparable from the history of the world, and that the two spheres should be studied in tandem. The book examines the transition from the age of the Apostles to the age of the Fathers, the conversion of the Roman Empire, and the rise of the Russian Church. It also discusses the impact of Protestantism and the changes brought by the French Revolution. Overall, the book provides a comprehensive overview of Ecclesiastical History, its significance, and its relevance to a range of disciplines, making it valuable for students and scholars alike.
