Excerpt from Selections From Edmond and Jules De Goncourt: Edited, With Introduction, Bibliography, Notes, and Appendices
Imperfections in editing are patent to editors them selves, and criticism will easily find the flaws. As to other points, it will be noticed that dialogue is much omitted, because not giving enough returns for proportion of space, and because the subtle spirit lof Parisianisms, or of French conversation, is often almost too difficult for translation. A very few excisions of lines, and two or three substitutions of words less marked in certain re spects than the French text, have been made in view of educational purpose.
