With the advent of the Review and the Cou rier the distribution of newspaper literature be came more general, but the prices were still exorbitant. As late as 1850 members of the working classes clubbed together for the pur chase of a paper, and in the bedding shop, the more intelltgent heckler read aloud the news, while his fellow-workmen took turn about at his work, thus making up for the lost time and pay ing for their education.
