Synopsis

How much control do workers actually have in British industry—and what does that mean for the future of work?

This study examines the real reach of workers and their unions in shaping factories, shops, and trade practices. It traces how control has evolved, where it comes from, and what it costs both employees and employers to share power in the workplace.

Through careful analysis of industrial relations, this book reveals how grievances, foremen’s authority, shop committees, and collective agreements interact in everyday production. It focuses on practical facts, not theory, to show what “control” looks like in different industries and how war-time changes influenced relations between labor and management.

  • How workers influence supervision, discipline, and the selection of foremen
  • How shop stewards and works committees operate to ventilate grievances
  • Patterns of collective bargaining, wage systems, and scope of worker input
  • Case studies and historical context that illuminate modern industrial governance

Ideal for readers of labor history and anyone curious about the practical challenges of workplace governance in Britain.
