Synopsis

Inside the Inquisition’s long reach across Europe, this study reveals how persecution masking as piety shaped history.

Discover how religious authorities defended harsh methods, and why intellectual freedom matters today.

This concise historical critique surveys how inquisitors operated from France to the Balkans, showing the persistence of persecution, the role of state power, and the tangled defenses offered by apologists. It examines how torture, confiscation, and public punishments were framed as justice, while highlighting the human cost and the impact on civilization.

Readers gain a critical look at the mechanics of suppression and the arguments used to justify it, along with reflections on the consequences for knowledge, culture, and religious freedom. The examination is rooted in historical events and influential writings, offering context without sensationalism.

  • How inquisitors extended power across different regions and centuries
  • The tactics used to extract confessions and to confiscate property
  • Critiques of the system from contemporary and later voices
  • The lasting questions about religion, law, and liberty

Ideal for readers of history and religious studies who want a clear, evidence-based view of a complex subject.
