From his firfi arrival he had refideda g'eat part of his timi in that univerfity, with which he was exceedingly delighted. Belide's the Bodleia'n library there, he met with feveral per ims of the firfl: clafs of learning in his own way, among whom he found that freedom of converfe and communication of findies, which is infeparable from true fcholars, whereby, together with his own indufh'y and application, he was now grown into univerfal eileem, and every where carefl'ed. The Alexandrian ms. Was the chief objefl of his labour. He examined it with his ufual diligence, and comparing it with. Copy from that of the vatican at Rome, he found it in (0 many places preferable thereto, that he refolved to print it as icon as pofiible. In this view, in 1704, he drew up a parti cular account of the preferences, efpecially in refpréi to the hook of Judges; and publiihed it, together with three {peei mens, containing (0 many different methods of his intended edition, to be determined in his choice by the learned. This came out in 1705, with propofals for printing it by fubfcrip lion, in a letter addrell'e'd to Dr. Mill, principal of Edmond hall, Oxford (l) and that nothing might be wanting which lay in the power of that learned body to promote the work, he was honoured with'the degree of dofior of divinity, early the following year, upon which occalion' Dr. Smallridge, who then ofiiciared as regius profell'or, (poke t'wo latin (peaches, containing the highefi compliment upon his merit, exprefl'ed in the moi! Elegant language, heightened with all that force of eloquence which [0 celebrated an author was able to give them. The fuccefs was abundantly anfwerable to his fondell: wslhes bolides the queen's bounty, he received another pre fent from his own (overeign the king of Prufia, and (ub fcriptions from the principal nobility, clergy, and gentry, crowded daily upon him from all parts.
