This book analyzes the effectiveness of flaw fabrication in a 1984 thick-steel weld specimen containing intentionally implanted flaws for non-destructive testing (NDT) evaluation. By comparing the sectioning data of the specimen with its intended flaw locations, the author assesses the reliability of the flaw fabrication procedure used in the 1960s. The author also re-examines the 1968 ultrasonic testing data of the same specimen using the sectioning data and an expert-system approach. The analysis results in quantitative estimates of the reliability of the 1968 procedure for flaw detection in thick-steel welds. The approach and methodology introduced in this book provide valuable insights into assessing and improving NDT procedures and their applications in engineering structures.
