Excerpt from English-Kikuyu Vocabulary: Compiled for the Use of the C. M.S. Missions in East Africa
This Vocabulary of the Kikuyu language is spoken by one of the most numerous tribes in the British East African Protectorate. Although many Euro peans have from time to time either passed through the country or resided in it, nothing in the shape of a vocabulary of the language has so far appeared in print. The compiler therefore sends it forth with a certain amount of misgiving. Many mistakes will, no doubt, be found as this language is more fully known. Those, however, who know what it is to reduce a new language, and what it is to have to search for every word, and to get the same often from very unwilling and unintelligent natives, will not be too critical in this case. The collection was made in the district of Kikuyu, called by Europeans Fort Smith (native name, Kabati), during the years 1901 and 1902, when the writer was stationed in that locality by the Church Missionary Society.
