But if this was the cafe. When I ventured on the taik, it did' not long continue fo. My publication was foon followed by a tranflation of the Poetic from the pen of Mr. Twining: a work of diftinguiihed excellence; and which, had it appeared earlier, would probably have precluded any attempt of mine on the fame fubje�'t. For though Mr. Twining, with a modefty and candour ever attending on real merit, obferves of my tranflation, that in many places where we differ if I am right, he mufi be wrong, I am perfectly convinced, that in molt places where we differ, the contrary to what he puts hypothetically is in fact true. Yet, though I generally agree with his fentiments, as I do not always, I thought it neceffary to prefix an amended.
