During the last year I have had occa sion to read a good deal of Canadian political, social, and literary comment. One of the distinguishing characteris tics of all of this material is the violent reversals in attitude that occur from time to time with respect to national confidence At certain periods you will have outbursts of Optimism of the most euphoric variety; at other times all writers will indulge in gloomy self lacerating criticism. For a period, Canada is the country that is about to emerge as the great hope of the world, as a rallying centre for man kind, as a model of economic prosper ity. At other times, Canada is the country that is about to revert to a state of abject colonialism or to enter a period of widespread penury.
