This book examines the interrelation of the philosophy of history created by Giambattista Vico and the lesser-known writings of Emerico Amari, a 19th-century Sicilian scholar, lawyer, and patriot. The author analyzes the manner in which Amari, while indebted to Vico's insistence upon the cyclical nature of nations and civilizations and the role of providence in the development of humanity, took issue with certain principles of Vico's philosophy. The book considers the debt Amari owed to Vico's historicism, while also establishing the ways in which he differed from Vico's account of the development of humankind and its laws. Central to Amari's critique of Vico is the former's conviction that Vico was mistaken in denying the influence of one civilization upon another. The book situates Amari within the context of 19th-century Italian unification, examining the ways in which his political thought and his writings on the science of legislation intersect with his Sicilian regionalism and his critique of what he perceived to be the centralizing tendencies of the newly formed Italian state. The author argues that Amari saw in Vico's philosophy a defense of diversity and local autonomy, a defense that, in the new context of a unified Italy, took on a new political urgency.
