Synopsis

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the profound and enduring influence of Lucretius's epic poem, "De Rerum Natura," on the thought and writings of Arnobius, a Christian apologist of the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. The author meticulously examines the interconnections between these two significant figures, exploring the ways in which Lucretius's philosophical ideas permeated Arnobius's theological arguments and shaped his distinctive worldview. Beyond the direct influence of Lucretius, the book also analyzes Arnobius's engagement with Platonism, particularly his complex relationship with Plato's theories on the immortality and pre-existence of the soul. The author demonstrates how Arnobius both drew upon and contested Platonic concepts, ultimately forging a unique synthesis that reflected his own Christian convictions while acknowledging the enduring legacy of classical philosophy. This nuanced analysis sheds light on the intellectual and philosophical currents that shaped early Christian thought, offering a valuable contribution to our understanding of the complex interplay between pagan and Christian ideas in the late antique world. The book's insights illuminate not only the specific relationship between Arnobius and Lucretius but also the broader intellectual landscape of the period, making it an essential read for scholars and students of ancient philosophy, religion, and intellectual history.
