Synopsis

Excerpt from The Dolmens of Ireland, Vol. 3 of 3: Their Distribution, Structural Characteristics, and Affinities in Other Countries; Together With the Folk-Lore Attaching to Them; Supplemented by Considerations on the Anthropology, Ethnology, and Traditions of the Irish People

Whether, as has been thought by some, a real linguistic affinity exists between the language of the Berbers of North Africa and that of the Basques, which would place the former, like the latter, in relation to the ancient Iberian Speech, is a question upon which I can express no opinion. M. Geze, after comparing a long list of words in the respective languages, came to the conclusion that the evidence pointed to a close connection having existed between the ancestors of the Berbers and the Basques; that the relations between them had been of long duration, but that they belonged to an epoch excessively remote}: The Berbers are classified, according to their cephalic index, with the Basques of the Spanish provinces and with the Corsicans.
