Excerpt from The Russells of Birmingham in the French Revolution and in America, 1791-1814
The irony of the Russells' destiny was that, driven, literally, by fire from their home, and seeking refuge in more enlightened foreign countries, they underwent, at French hands, treatment more painful than they had suffered in England, and when, after an ex hausting Odyssey by sea and land, they reached an American haven, they gained little relief from the narrowness of thought and religious intolerance to which, when they sailed from their native Shores, they believed they had bidden a long farewell.
