Mommsenii librum ei, qui de bistoriao Romanee parte scribit, plurimi momenti esse per se apparet; hunc enim virum singulari prorsus mentis acumino praeditum per multos errores sustulisse nemo ignorat. N eque vero hoc loco silentio praetermittere possum, qua potissimum re ut in ceteris libri partibus ita in hac de Graccbis scripta ofi'endar. Mommsen nimia saepe severitate de hominibus iudicare solet; acerbe prorsus et contemptim in eos invehitur, qui non idem semper in rebus publicis sibi proposuerunt, propositum summa cum constantia persecuti sunt. Ita fit ut nonnulli viri qui tempo ribus mutatis etiam consilia et rationes muteront, id quod persaepe Optima mente fieri potest, gravissima castigatione ab eo vexentur; non minus inde fit, ut viros fortes et propositi tenaces, etsi iustitia iis defuit, summis laudibus feret ut Caesarem. Sane con cedendum est inconstantiam et infirmitatem gravia eorum vitia esse, qui rempublicam gubernent; at temporum nobis in indicando ratio habenda est; quod si observaverimus, multa nobis longo temporis intervallo remotis excusatione digniora videbuntur. Hoc autem omittit Mommsen; et cum ex rebus quas aliquis publico gessit de universo quasi homine iudicat, nihil curans qualem in ceteris vitae partibus se praestiterit, vituperationis modum baud raro excedit, quod in Cicerone videmus. Hue aliud accedit. Summa est dicendi elegantia et ubertate, vi et gravitate. Adeo autem non horret dictiones fortis simas ut nonnunquam auream mediocritatem transeat. Qua severitate de hominihus iudicat, eadem dictionis gravitate et saepe acerbitate sententiae exprimit. Valde hac re inter se difl'erunt Niebuhr et Mommsen. N iebuhrium summae gravitatis fuisse constat; multos qui antea laude florebaut, baud levi castigat vituperatioue. N ibilo minus autem Niebuhrii lectione longe aliter aflicimur quam Mommsenii. Etenim ex omnibus historiae Romanae partibus a N iebuhrio scriptae summa eius admiratio et pietas qua antiquitatem reverebatur, apparet; Niebuhr non sola ratione et mente, sed animo quoque et pectore in rebus antiquis versatus est. Contra Mommsenii librum perlegentes maxima quidem admiratione singularis eius acuminis et doctrinae afficimur sed nimia eius iudicii severi tate et acerbitate qua vel optimes viros insequitur non nihil saepe ofl'endimur.
