Such being the character and importance of the German lan guage, various attempts have been made, as was natural, to give greater facility in learning it. Some of these are nuques tionably excellent works; executed, according to the plan which they have adopted, in a manner skillful and judicious. But just here, in pkw, as it seems to the present writer, all of them are more or less lacking; and out of this conviction has arisen the present volume.
