Excerpt from Method of Measuring Earth Pressures on Vertical and Inclined Retaining Walls: A Thesis Presented by Morris Fainstein to the President and Faculty of Armour Institute of Technology; For the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, May 1920
Retaining walls belong to that type of structures which is often dealt with by the engineer, but at the same time he knows very little of the actual forces which they will have to resist after completion. This uncertainty is due to lack of experimental data, and the designer must use mathematical conclusions as the only available guide in carrying out his design.
