Synopsis

Excerpt from Chester as It Was

Again, to return to the Cathedral, which is necessarily the most conspicuous feature of Chester, and which is now in process of diligent reparation, it was dith cult to decide how many of the results of Mr. Gilbert Scott's restorative process ought to be exhibited in a representation of the past. Assuming the Restoration to be strictly and minutely correct - and we all know the large experience, singular skill, and conscientious care of this distinguished Architect - it was impossible to know, with regard, for instance, to the east end of the Choir or the south end of the South Transept, what was in ruin during any particular reign, or how far anything survived, which is now beginning to re-appear. An intentional inconsistency.
