This book is a celebrated history, insightfully tracing the lineage of the most prominent of all Portuguese statesmen, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis of Pombal. Born into a noble family in 1699, Pombal's early life seems unremarkable until he is banished from Lisbon. It is then that he finds his passion for statecraft and returns to find favor in the Portuguese court. He establishes himself as a brilliant and ruthless reformer, rebuilding the Portuguese economy and reasserting royal authority. But his greatest impact comes from his courageous opposition to the influence of the Catholic Church, a battle which places him at odds with the Inquisition, the Jesuits, and even the Pope himself. The author presents a vivid and dramatic account of this struggle for control, and in doing so sheds new light on the sensitive interplay of politics and religion in 18th century Europe.
