Il importe de bien accentuer, dès le début, que j'entends, dans ces leçons, ne parler que de la langue des pays-bas qui actuellement forment le royaume de Hollande. Le nom de pays-bas est équivoque; plus d'une fois dans le cours des siècles, la Hollande été réunie à la Belgique actuelle et, ensemble, elles ont alors porté ce nom général. De là une certaine confusion; on applique parfois à la langue néerlandaise propre (c'est-à dire la langue du royaume de Hollande), ce qui n'est vrai que du flamand (c'est-à-dire la langue germanique parlée dans une partie dela Belgique). Or, je répète que ce dont je veux traiter ici c'est de l'influence que la langue française a eue sur celle du royaume actuel qui est limité au sud par la Belgique, à l'est par l'allemagne, au nord et à l'ouest par la mer du Nord.
