The earliest account comes from Ibn Habib, an hispano-arabic writer of the latter part of the eighth century who tells us that at Toledo Musa found a sacred house of Kings in which there were twenty-five crowns, each inscribed with the name of a Visi gothic King. Near this house was another one furnished with twenty-four locks, one of which had been added by each suc cessive king until Rodrigo came to the. Throne. Filled with curiosity to see what was within this bolted house, Roderick broke open the locks in spite of the warnings of the priests.
