Excerpt from Lectures on Quaternions

Some readers may find it convenient to pass over for the present these pro fatory remarks, and to proceed at once to the Volume, of which a large part has been drawn up so as to suppose less of previous and technical preparation than some of the paragraphs of this Preface. Indeed, great pains have been taken to render the early Lectures as elementary as the subject would allow and it is hoped that they will be found perfectly and even easily intelligible by persons of moderate scientific attainments. It is true that some of the subsequent por tions of the Course (especially parts of the concluding Lecture) may possibly appear dificult. From the novel nature of the calculations employed: but perhaps on that very account those later portions may repay the attention of more ad vanced mathematical students.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating evolution of a groundbreaking mathematical concept known as the "Calculus of Quaternions." The author, a dedicated scholar in the field, guides readers through the challenges posed by traditional algebraic notions like negative and imaginary quantities. The author's journey began with a quest to find a more profound understanding of algebra, not merely as a tool for calculation, but as a science of order and progression. This pursuit led to a unique interpretation of algebra as the "Science of Pure Time," where moments and intervals take center stage. The exploration extends beyond single entities to encompass "couples," "triplets," and even "sets" of moments and steps, ultimately paving the way for the development of the quaternion theory. This book offers a captivating blend of historical context, philosophical insights, and mathematical innovation. It challenges conventional views of algebra and invites readers to appreciate the profound connections between abstract concepts and the nature of time itself. By unraveling the complexities of quaternions, the author sheds light on a powerful mathematical tool that has far-reaching implications for our understanding of the universe.
