Synopsis
This book examines the introduction and use of rifles in the early 19th century, their advantages and disadvantages compared to older weapons, and the debates surrounding their adoption by various militaries. The author himself was heavily involved in testing and evaluating the rifles of the time, and many of his insights are based on extensive tests he conducted, as well as his own experience with warfare. Of particular note is his advocacy for a system of rifle practice, which would later form the basis for the way soldiers trained with their rifles. While technology and methods have drastically changed over the ensuing years, the discussions and debates presented in this book still bear relevance today, demonstrating how little has changed in the fundamental conversations surrounding the adoption of new weapons.
