Es ist mir eine hohe Freude, eine neue Auflage dieser Erstlingsschrift, elf Jahre nach ihrem Erscheinen, herausgeben zu dürfen. Wenn auch meine Studien sich andern Zeiten und Verhältnissen zugewandt haben, verlor ich doch die in dieser Arbeit behandelten Gegenstände nie, gänzlich aus den Augen und habe mich nun bemüht, die Ergebnisse der in der Zwischen zeit erfolgten Forschungen in Text und Anmerkungen zu ver werthen. Doch hielt ich es weder für nothwendig, spater er schienene Arbeiten, deren Resultate keinen Fortschritt enthalten, etwa der blossen Vollständigkeit wegen, zu erwähnen, noch polemisch in Einzelheiten einzugehen.
