Excerpt from Versuch Einer Bewertung Chemischer Theorien
Extrapolationen, die man durch Auflosung von Gleichungen gibt, welche auf Grund einiger Tatsachen aufgestellt werden sind, haben, wenn sie experimentell nicht geprüft werden können, nur rechnerischen, keinen naturwissenschaftlichen Wert. Wenn auch das Zusammenfassen von Tatsachen zu Gesetzen die Naturbeschreibung äußerst ökonomisch ge staltet, so ist es doch von Wichtigkeit, diese Ökonomie der Beschreibung dadurch zu steigern, daß man auch einige, oder wenn möglich alle Gesetze in ähnlicher Weise zu sammenfaßt. Will man also eine Systematik der Gesetze erzielen, so muß man Analogien aufsuchen, die zwischen ihnen bestehen. Damit ist die Grenze der exakten For schung erreicht. Einen Grund für diese Analogien aufzu finden, ist unmöglich, da nur die Tatsache des Geschehens festgestellt werden kann, Ursachen dagegen nicht. Wenn uns aber eine Art des Geschehens sehr vertraut ist, so erscheint sie uns selbstverständlich, während wir bei einer seltener vorkommenden Art nach der Ursache fragen. Haben wir aber eine Analogie zwischen einer selbstverständlichen und einer nicht selbstverständlichen Art ausfindig gemacht, so glauben wir letztere erklärt zu haben, und unser Kau salitätsbedürfnis ist befriedigt. Bei diesen Erklärungen handelt es sich also nur um Analogien, die zwischen zwei Vorgängen bestehen, nie aber um Begründung des einen durch den anderen. Geht man aber weiter, und sucht man nach Gründen für diese Analogie, so ist eine Lösung des Problems nicht mehr eindeutig möglich, da das Experiment versagt.
