Synopsis
This book explores the socioeconomics of life in ancient Sumer and Akkad through a collection of 890 newly discovered clay tablets. Dated to the reigns of Dungi, Bur-Sin, Gimil-Sin, and Ibi-Sin of the Third Dynasty of Ur, these tablets primarily consist of detailed livestock tallies that were delivered regularly to the temple of Enlil. In addition to shedding more light on the religious dimension of ancient Sumerian life, these tablets offer rare, detailed insights into the society's organization, including the interconnected roles of kings and governors, laborers and supervisors, as well as the economic complexities of food production, wage labor, and debt. Providing a fresh look at an ancient society, this book enhances our understanding of the social and economic fabric that defined the course of civilization in southern Mesopotamia.
