Il ne s'est rien passé de remarquable pendant tout le premier jour; le mercure, quoique non bouillant, était dans un état d'évaporation continuelle; il tapissait l'intérieur des vaisseaux de gouttelettes, d'abord très fines, qui allaient ensuite peu à peu en augmentant, et qui, lorsqu'elles avaient acquis un certain volume, retombaient d'elles-mêmes au fond du vase. Le second jour, j'ai commencé a voir nager, sur la surface du mercure, de petites par celles rouges, qui, en peu de jours, ont augmenté en nombre et en volumes; enfin, au bout de douze jours, ayant ce'ssé le feu et laissé refroidir les vaisseaux, j'ai observé que l'air qu'ils contenaient était diminué de 8 à. 9 pouces cubiques, c'esta-dire, environ d'un sixième de son volume; en même temps il s'était formé une portion assez considérable, et que j'ai évaluée environ à. 45 grains, de mercure pré cipité per se, autrement dit, de chaux de mercure.
Cet air, ainsi diminué, ne précipitait nullement l'eau de chaux; mais il éteignait les lumières, il faisait périr en peu de temps les animaux qu'on y plongeait, il ne donnait presque plus de vapeurs rouges avec l'air nitreux, il n'était plus sensible ment diminué par lui, en un mot il était dans un état absolument méphitique.
