Excerpt from A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary: For the Use of Students
The above rule is, however, subject to one condition, namely, that the spelling given should actually occur, and should not be merely an assumed form. Hence if a word does not occur in the characteristic Early West Saxon form, I have taken the Late W'est Saxon, and if this again is not found, I have fallen back on a dialectic form.
It will no doubt be observed that this plan has not always been adhered to, but the exceptions have usually been made on some ground of expediency, such as the preponderating frequency of occurrence of a certain form, or the desire to bring all the compounds of a word to the same place.
Normalisations have, as will be inferred from what has gone before, been generally avoided. I cannot hope to have excluded them altogether, as they swarm in some of the glossaries on which the Dictionary is founded. A few, which I have noticed at a late stage, have been ear-marked with an asterisk.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive dictionary of Old English, a language spoken in England from roughly the 5th to the 12th centuries. The author meticulously compiled the dictionary by drawing from a vast array of resources, including numerous glossaries to Anglo-Saxon textbooks and readers, as well as several important dictionaries. One of the bookââ â¢s key features is its focus on actual spellings as found in the texts, rather than relying on normalized forms, a practice common in other dictionaries of the time. The author also carefully addresses homonyms, which can be especially challenging for beginners. Furthermore, the dictionary provides etymological information, linking Old English words to their cognates in other languages, particularly German. This book is designed for students and scholars alike, offering a rich resource for exploring the intricacies of Old English and gaining a deeper understanding of the language and culture of our Saxon ancestors. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
