Many other methods have been successfully tried to preserve wood. Sunking it is an excellent practice, but charring is better where the use of the timber admits it, as in posts. The plan has been in some cases adopted of placing the wood in a large air-tight chamber, and producing a vacuum. This rapidly evaporates the juices of the wood which are condensed in another chamber, but the process is mostly used when the introduction of foreign substances as oil is intended. Tar isan excellent preservative.
