Excerpt from George Rogers Clark and the Winning of the Old Northwest

One day in June he interrupted his training exercises on Corn lsland, assembled his men, and read his secret orders aloud. He' proposed, he said, to take them into the Illinois country. There they would seize three settlements: Vincennes on the Wabash River, Kaskaskia on the Mississippi, 130 river miles above the mouth of the Ohio, and Cahokia, up the Mississippi near the mouth of the Missouri. He then hoped to obtain rein forcements, march north, and seize Fort Detroit on the neck of land between Lake Erie and Lake Huron.

The book delves into Clarks' meticulous planning and bold tactics, as he navigated treacherous rivers, outwitted enemy forces, and secured alliances with French settlers and Native American tribes. The gripping narrative reveals the challenges faced by Clark and his men, their resilience in the face of overwhelming odds, and the significance of their victory at Kaskaskia, which turned the tide of the war in the west. Through vivid descriptions and primary source material, this book sheds light on the complexities of frontier warfare, the role of diplomacy in securing alliances, and the impact of this campaign on the course of American history.
