Synopsis
This book is the first volume of a systematic treatise on the foundations of analysis. It presents the subject in a rigorous and self-contained manner that aims to prevent the reader from losing sight of the inherent unity of mathematics. The author's approach is based on the principle that the theory of functions, like the calculus, should be based on the notion of number, and not vice versa. This perspective is reflected in the book's treatment of topics, which include the theory of whole numbers, the introduction of fractional and irrational numbers, and the development of the theory of functions of real and complex variables. By presenting these topics from the perspective of number theory, the author provides readers with a more profound understanding of the foundations of analysis.
