Synopsis

Excerpt from Crime and Custom in Savage Society

The Circumstances under which this thesis came into being have also contributed towards its present form. The material was first prepared and the conclusions framed in response to an invitation from the Royal Institution Of Great Britain, before which a paper was read (on the Forces of Law and Order in a Primitive Community on Friday evening, 13th February, 1925. As often happens, I found myself with more material on my hands and many more conclusions framed than could be included in an hour's address. Some of these I have had the privilege of publishing in Nature (see Supplement.

About the Author

Bronislaw Malinowski (1884-1942) was one of the most important anthropologists of the twentieth century. He was known for his ethnographic work in the Trobriand Islands, which yielded material for such classic works as Argonauts of the Western Pacific, Sexual Life of Savages in Northwestern Melanesia, Coral Gardens and Their Magic, and Crime and Custom in Savage Society.

Review

Now and then a book is written which cuts mercilessly through an accumulation of traditional conceptions and by the light of overlooked or misinterpreted facts and common sense shows us how absurd the orthodox ideas have really been. Such a book is this volume of Dr. Malinowski's, which brilliantly, concisely, and in non-technical language demonstrates how very wrong and indeed impossible are the currently accepted views of some of the fundamentals of savage life. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Embark on a thought-provoking journey into the heart of early legal systems and societal structures with this captivating exploration of law and order within a Melanesian tribal community. Challenging long-held assumptions about the nature of rules and their enforcement in societies often labeled as 'primitive', the author delves into the intricate web of customs, obligations, and exchanges that govern daily life. This book unveils a legal landscape far more complex than simple obedience to tradition. It explores the concept of reciprocity as the cornerstone of social organization, where mutual dependencies and meticulously balanced exchanges ensure stability and cooperation. From fishing expeditions and food bartering to marriage rituals and mourning customs, the author illustrates how seemingly disparate activities are intricately connected through a web of give-and-take. Delving into the motivations behind adherence to these social contracts, the author reveals the interplay of self-interest, ambition, and the desire for social recognition as driving forces. This nuanced perspective dismantles the notion of the 'savage' as a passive follower of rules, instead portraying individuals as active participants in a complex system where every action carries consequences and contributes to the overall equilibrium. Ultimately, this book's insights illuminate the universality of legal principles and the fundamental human need for order and fairness, regardless of cultural context.
