This book describes the work of the joint committee on concrete and reinforced concrete which was formed in 1904. The volume covers the origins, organization, personnel, history, investigations, funding, structural materials testing, concrete and reinforced concrete, building blocks, chemical analysis, programme for investigation and the examination and classification of constituent materials, tests and classification of mortars, and the strength and relation of concrete made from cement and stone upon beams, columns, flag, gravel, and sand. The author provides an examination and explains the physical tests that were conducted in the laboratory such as tensile and compressive strength, transverse and shearing strength, the modulus of elasticity and absorption, porosity, permeability, fire-resisting qualities, freezing tests, volumetric changes, and the effect of vibration and of applied stress impact on concrete. The book also describes the equipment and machinery used for testing, acknowledges donations to the project by industry partners, and includes half-tone reproductions of photographs of only a portion of the apparatus used in the research.
