Excerpt from The Natural Method Readers: A Primer
This book consists almost entirely of nursery rhymes and of sentences in which the words of these rhymes occur.
In the case of longer rhymes or those calling for ex tended treatment the rhyme is first printed as a whole so that the teacher may read it to the class. Then portions of the rhyme are given in prose form in such a way that the child may become familiar with the words. Finally, the completed rhyme is presented to be read by the pupils. The rhyme thus becomes a part of the child's mental equipment, and is made to serve as a key to the recognition of words. It takes but little practice to enable the pupil to pick out the words of the rhyme.
The skillful teacher does not take up the book in the first stages of instruction. The work is begun on the blackboard, and oral work necessarily forms a great part of the instruction.
