It does this by developing, in a new way, a body of propositions that can be applied in the solution of spherical triangles. These triangles—often used to solve for the parts of triangles and circles that lie on spheres—are central to navigation, geography, astronomy, and crystallography. The author's interest in the topic was piqued by the fact that no comprehensive work on spherical geometry has been written since the days of Theodosius and Menelaus.
