Excerpt from The Reproductive Process: Its Histology, Physiology, and Pathology; Demonstrating the Unity of the Anatomical Type of the Placenta in All the Mammalia, and the Physiological Unity of the Nutrition of the Foetus in All the Vertebrates
The typical form of the new glandular secreting organ does not depart from the common form of a simple glandular follicle of the animal organism. Likewise the typical form of the fetal placenta, or absorbing portion, is that of a vascular loop, more or less elongated, or of a villus. This is Observed, with a few rare exceptions, in the three fundamental species Of placenta admitted by anatomists under the names of disseminated, diffused, or villous placenta, multiple placenta, and single placenta.
In the diagrams, I have represented vertical sec tions of the uterus and Of the placenta Of animals and Of the human species, in order that the relations always existing between the two portions of the ple centa may be more clearly demonstrated.
