Excerpt from Synonyms: Designed to Give Skill in the Choice and Right Use of Words, and to Afford Variety and Facility in Expression
The purpose of this book, as, indeed, of all books of this character, is to assist the writer in finding the best word to express his thought. Even the most skillful writers are sometimes embarrassed in their effort to make a sentence more clear, or simple, or terse, or musical.
The word synonym literally implies an exact coincidence of meaning of two or more words. If this definition were rigidly followed we should have no books of synonyms, for the occasions are very rare in which one word is the exact equivalent of another.
