Excerpt from A Manual of Applied Mechanics
Other portions of the work, which are wholly or partly new, are indicated in their places.
In the arrangement of this treatise an effort has been made to adhere as rigidly as possible to a methodical classification of its subjects; and, in particular, care has been taken to keep in view the distinction between the comparison of motions with each other, and the relations between motions and forces, which was first pointed out by Monge and Ampere, and which Mr. Willis has so successfully applied to the subject of mechanism. The observing of that distinction is highly conducive to the correct understanding and ready application of the principles of Mechanics.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of applied mechanics, exploring the principles governing the behavior of structures and machines. It bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications, providing a comprehensive understanding of how forces interact with and within physical objects. Throughout history, a misconception persisted, separating theoretical mechanics, deemed noble and applicable to celestial bodies, from practical mechanics, considered inferior and relevant only to earthly matters. This book dismantles this fallacy, emphasizing the unified nature of mechanical laws that govern both the cosmos and the creations of human ingenuity. The author guides readers through fundamental concepts such as force, equilibrium, and motion, gradually progressing towards more complex topics like stress, elasticity, and the strength of materials. With clarity and precision, the book elucidates the principles behind the design and analysis of structures, from simple beams to intricate bridges and arches. By merging theoretical foundations with practical insights, this book equips readers with the knowledge to analyze and design structures and machines effectively. Its exploration of the harmony between theory and practice empowers engineers and mechanics to elevate their craft and contribute to advancements in the field. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
