Excerpt from The Center Line, Vol. 2: September 1939
In connection with the bridges mentioned, many of these strue tures are of somewhat antiquated design, due to the fact that this sec tion was, and still is, the Crossroads of the Northwest, resulting that many bridges were needed and built to serve the populous Midland Empire during the comparatively early days of the State Highway Commis sion. The big problem of the old timers was not so much'good roads as it was the problem.of stream crossings. Such streams as the Boulder, Stillwater, big.horn, Little Big Kern and Rosebud Rivers, all tributaries of the Yellowstone, presented year - round crossing difficulties. The same was true of the Musselshell. The first several years of the existence of the State Highway Commission were devoted almost exclusively to brid ges. That its principals of design and construction were sound is'at tested by the fact that many of the first bridges constructed by the Commission are still in use and serving well.
