Vi fu un momento in cui parve che il suo buon genio fosse finalmente vicino a trionfare, in cui l' animo suo disingannato omai dopo tante e si amare esperienze, degli onori fugge voli della Corte che non l' appagavano mai, parve volersi concentrare in sè stesso, e cercare nell' arte la soddisfazione e la tranquillità in darno fin allora sospirata; e fu quando, nel 1640, dopo la seconda sua ambasciata di Spagna colla quale ben si può dire che il Testi abbia raggiunto l' apogeo della sua fortuna chiese tutto ad un tratto, ed ottenne il governo della Garfagnana, già stato, poco più di un secolo prima, onorato da un altro poeta, ben più gran de e più saggio di lui, voglio dire l'ariosto..
