Un dramma che rimanda all'al di là tutte le energie umane e i fremiti del cuore, e si fa portavoce della più rigida morale ascetica, avrebbe quella sola vita che è nei trattati di edificazione per i devoti ed i candidati del cielo, sdegnerebbe, fuggirebbe ogni sorriso di poesia, se non lo animasse il poeta con le forze di vita che l'asceta condanna e maledice, se non desse corpo e figura a quelle larve terrene, frustate dal pensiero del saggio, apparse per dissolversi rapide nel regno delle ombre, se insomma non si compiacesse lui stesso dei fantasmi evocati, prima di gettarli nei vortici del nulla, e non negasse la vita solo dopo di averla possentemente affermata. La commedia si svolge entro un mondo di fole e d'inganni. E il sipario cala quando lo spettacolo di una vita oltreterrena si annuncia e il sogno si estingue nella piena quietudine dello spirito.
