Synopsis

This book presents the Earth-Current Meter, an instrument that measures current density in the earth, initially developed to help detect irregularities in underground pipes and cables. The instrument is of great historical importance in the field of electrolysis testing and research. An innovation of the Earth-Current Meter is its avoidance of sources of error inherent in older methods of electrolysis testing, using instead a method of measuring the earth's voltage gradient and resistivity to calculate discharge density. The Earth-Current Meter also greatly simplifies the process of electrolysis testing by eliminating complex calculations of true voltage drop, resistivity, and other factors. The author explains the principles behind the instrument and the theory of its operation, emphasizing that neither resistivity nor true potential drop need be determined in order to calculate earth current. Additionally, the book contains instructions for the use of the Earth-Current Meter as both an earth-current density and resistivity measuring device, and guidance on the interpretation of data. The Earth-Current Meter showed that in many locations the electrical relations between underground structures are very complicated, and that the older methods of testing involved a number of errors that under some conditions made the significance of observations doubtful. The Earth-Current Meter was designed to avoid these sources of error, and with it much more exact and detailed information can be obtained than by other means, making this book a valuable tool for understanding electrolysis testing methods and their application.
