Synopsis
This text is the inaugural address of Alexander Siemens, the new President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1894. Siemens celebrates the rapid growth of the last 12 years in which applications of electricity have flourished. He summarizes the passing of the Electric Lighting Act in England and the boom in electrical engineering which followed, despite the Act's many obstacles. Siemens then outlines the problems standing in the way of electrical engineering's further development, including lack of cooperation between local authorities and electric light companies, outmoded legislation, and the faulty expectations of the public. Despite these difficulties, he remains optimistic about the future of electrical engineering as the main source of power distribution—and indeed the indispensable foundation of modern life.
