This book chronicles the history of the Prayer Book from the beginning of liturgical worship to 1892. It begins with the Jewish synagogue and temple worship, then traces the evolution of Christian worship from its earliest forms to the development of various liturgies throughout Europe. The author discusses the process of translating parts of the liturgy into vernacular languages and examines the challenges of teaching the people the meaning of the services. This book argues that the First Prayer Book of King Edward VI was a much-needed revision of the Latin service books that had been used in England for centuries. While it was generally accepted and used, this book highlights that the book gave complete satisfaction to nobody. It concludes by emphasizing the significance of the Prayer Book's role in the history of Christian worship and the development of the English language.
