On peut découvrir les premiers symptômes de ses pensées ambitieuses et d'une habileté peu commune, en même temps que d'un grand sens politique, dans la formule de serment qu'il rédigea après le déplorable forfait de Ravaillac, assassin de Henri IV; Richelieu écrivit, en effet, non moins à la louange du roi dé funt, son bienfaiteur, qu'à celle de la nouvelle ré gente, appelée à devenir bientôt sa protectrice, l'acte suivant, véritable préface de sa vie politique.
