Excerpt from Applied Science, Vol. 23: Incorporated With Transactions of the University of Toronto Engineering Society; January, 1911
The above discussion has assumed that the pipe is just filled with water to the top. We can easily see that the bending mo ments are not affected by the water pressure after the top is passed. In other Words, the bending moments induced in the shell are caused by the difference in pressure between the top and any other point chosen, and this difference remains constant for any head above the top. The tension in the shell, however, varies directly with the head and is equal to H y r, where H is the head on the top of the pipe.
This amount must be added to the above obtained value of the tension to obtain the general expression.
