Je suis heureux de constater ici que cette publication, sans précédent peut-être' en Russie, n'a soulevé aucune protestation. C'est à la fois la preuve de la véracité des documents dont je me suis servi et de la réserve avec laquelle j'en ai usé. Je dois dire, du reste, qu'ils ne m'avaient été confiés qu'à cette condition. Si le gouvernement impé rial a jugé bon d'interdire la circulation de Un Homme d'état russe, c'est à une époque Où les plus bienveillantes de mes études sur l'empire des tsars étaient impitoyable ment victimes du caviar ou des oiseaux de la censure.
J'ai connu, en Russie ou ailleurs, beaucoup des hommes dont les noms et les lettres reviennent dans ce volume. Je n'ai malheureusement jamais rencontré celui qui sert de centre à ce récit, Nicolas Milutine. Il est mort à Moscou, en janvier 1872, quelques semaines avant mon premier voyage en Russie. Par contre j'ai vu, et à Moscou et à Paris, les deux illustres amis dont la mémoire est insépa rable de la sienne, le prince Tcherkassky et G. Samarine. Le souvenir de leurs traits et de leurs entretiens m'est demeuré présent; il animait pour moi les feuilles déjà jau nies de leur correspondance; les pages de ce volume en gar dent encore la marque vivante.
